Fostering Korean Heritage in Houston
Who We Are
Han Narea is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the Houston area, dedicated to enriching the cultural tapestry of the greater Houston community. We serve as a cultural bridge, fostering appreciation and understanding of the depth, beauty, and traditions of Korean culture, arts, and heritage.
Founded by Hyun Heo in 2016, Han Narea was formed with a clear vision: to bring quality, professional performances to the Greater Houston area so that the larger community could enjoy and learn about traditional Korean culture. Through classes in traditional dances and instruments, as well as the production of traditional performances throughout southern Texas, we seek to develop a deeper understanding of Korean culture in the USA—encouraging people to look beyond the surface of K-pop and develop a richer appreciation of Korea and its people.
Our Mission
We connect communities through hands-on education, cultural events, and local partnerships—celebrating Korean heritage and sharing it across Houston in the spirit of Gayeon (가연), a joyful meeting through shared culture. We aim to bring traditional Korean culture to the greater Houston community—not just the local Korean community—so that everyone can experience and appreciate its richness.
One of our major areas of focus is bringing professional traditional performance groups directly from Korea to give the Houston community an opportunity to enjoy and learn about the culture as if they were in Korea itself.
What We Do
Han Narea produces and participates in a rich calendar of annual events and festivals across Houston's most prominent cultural venues:
- MFAH Arts of Korea Gallery Celebration: An annual partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, featuring live traditional music and dance performances, gallery tours, and Korean cuisine.
- Discovery Green Lunar New Year Festival: A celebration of the Lunar New Year at one of Houston's premier downtown parks.
- Asia Society Texas Center: Sold-out Super Saturday celebrations featuring vibrant dance performances and festive rhythms for families and audiences of all ages.
- Houston Korean Festival (KFest): Hanbok photobooths and traditional performances at Houston's largest annual Korean festival.
- MFAH Winter Festival: Korean cultural experiences during the museum's Lunar New Year programming.
- Local Community & School Events: Grassroots outreach helping to share traditional Korean culture at the local level.
We regularly bring professional performance groups from Korea to Houston, such as Samulnori Newdot and DORI from Seoul, who perform Samulnori—a percussive music style rooted in traditional village and farming celebrations using instruments made of wood, leather, and metal—reinterpreting those traditions for contemporary audiences.
Korean Adoptee Outreach
One of our most meaningful programs is the Korean Adoptee Cultural Roots Festival, an annual event that welcomes Korean adoptees and their families to connect with their birth heritage. Hosted at venues such as the Asia Society Texas Center, the festival features traditional performances by groups brought from Korea, meals, and informational resources provided in partnership with the Korean Consulate General's Office and 325 KAMRA to assist adoptees interested in family search or Korean citizenship. This program reflects our deep commitment to expanding resources and services for Korean adoptees and their families across Texas.
